Michael Adams vs Bogdan Lalic both normal time rate games were drawn as were both ten minute games, the first sudden death playoff game was won by Michael Adams.

In the first round of the 10 min quickplay, Lalic beat Davies 2-0; Emms beat Wells 1.5-0.5; Rowson 1-1 Miles (first two drawn, Rowson going through after winning first 5-min sudden death); Turner 2-0 Flear; Speelman 1-1 Ward (first two 10min drawn; Speelman going through after winning the fifth 5-min sudden death).

The time control is 100 minutes plus 30 seconds per move for the whole game with one round per day and two games per round. Matches tied at 1-1 will be decided by two ten minute games followed by sudden death blitz if necessary. The prize fund is £7,400 with the eight first round losers receiving 200 pounds, second round losers receive 400 pounds, semi-finalists take home 600 pounds. The two finalists will split 3000 pounds with 2000 going to the winner if the match is settled without speed chess.
