annotated database in the world. The most recent games of the database

Team Championship in Leon is included. For the first time,Mega 2002
also features a new edition of the playerbase for ChessBase 8.0 (2nd
CD). As usual, this is where most of the work was done.As the player
index now contains already more than 130.000 entries, it made sense
to use an adapted playerbase which includes about 130.000 names. Doing
this, the photo database was extended as well to contain 13.000 pictures
now.

Queen
’s Gambit with 5.Bf4
by GM Rustem Dautov RRP:
£17.95
/ $27
The
Queens Gambit Orthodox is one of the most solid defences for Black
against 1.d4. From White's point of view, the system after 1.d4
d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 Be7 5.Bf4 has raised enormously in adherents,
and has nearly superseded 5.Bg5 in popularity. In view of the fantastic
63% score for the first player, this can hardly be surprising.
Dautov
has included in his database 13 texts and 3657 games, 255 games
have been annotated, 81 of which by the author himself - most of
them exclusively for this CD. A second database contains 20 games

Only
a few top chess players know how to share their grandmasterly thinking
with others. Without any doubt, English grandmaster Daniel King
is one of them. Apart from the introduction, the CD at hand contains
29 databases issued between 1995 and 2000 when King was in charge
of the "Strategy column of the ChessBase Magazine. His broad
theme spectrum reaches from
king marches via opposed castlings to shifting rooks. From King's
databases one always derives double benefit: firstly, each of his
articles reveals secrets of the mind of a grandmaster and outstanding
representative of the
English chess school, and secondly, his videos and texts are highly
entertaining.
ChessBase makes chess training fun:
- multimedia chess training course on CD ROM

Robert Huebner: World Champion Alekhine
Alexander Alekhine dominated the chess scene from 1927 until his death
in the year of 1946. Historical picture documents and more than 2000
Alekhine games make the great master come back to life. For the ambitious
learner, the CD features two training databases. In topical videos,
contemporary grandmasters tell us which of Alekhine's qualities they
appreciate most. And Gary Kasparov,
the world's strongest chess player of our time, says: "My idol
in chess is Alexander Alekhine. His chess style corresponds best to
the way I want to play chess."
Robert
Huebner Grandmaster Dr Robert Huebner has been the best German chessplayer
for 30 years and repeatedly fought for the world championship in
candidate tournaments. He is considered one of the best chess commentators
in the world and has occupied himself with Alexander Alekhine already
since his youth.

e6 5.e3 Nbd7 6.Bd3 dxc4 7.Bxc4 b5). It is no coincidence that it belongs
to the opening repertoire of Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand and Shirov.

This is a data CD, which contains a games database with over 350,000
correspondence chess games. The games are in Chessbase (new and old
formats), Chess Assistant and PGN. About 30,000 of the games are annotated.
It also contains Chess Mail magazines from 1996-2001 to read on screen
or print out, tournament crosstables, information, and photographs.
This CD will run on Windows or Apple Macintosh.
The
Dragon for Experts RRP:£17.95 / $27
The CD covers all variations of the Dragon System of the Sicilian
Defense after the starting moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4
Nf6 5.Nc3 g6. Hungary´s International Master Attila Schneider
has an excellent reputation among the fans of this opening, having
excelled with many publications and discoveries in his favourite chess
field. His first CD is intended first of all for players who already
have some experience with the Dragon.
This CD contains: - a small special database featuring the main piece
of the author's work, 34 surveys with clear evaluations of each line
in words and variations.
- a database with 9300 selected quality games, 500 of which with annotations.
- a big tree of all Dragon games available from ChessBase.
RETI
OPENING RRP: £17.95 / $27
What
is the Reti opening anyway? Okay, 1.Nf3 d5, but then? Well, almost
anything, only d2-d4 should not be played immediately (for that would
be queen´s gambit). The typical moves are 2.c4 and 2.g3, less
topical is a setup with b3 and Bb2. The first player should be prepared
to react to any black scheme. Yes, if necessary even d2-d4 will be
played in the end. But it's just this variability which makes the
white setup so dangerous.
The Reti CD includes 32.000 games, more than 1.000 of which with annotations.
The opening key contains more than 14.000 games both for 1.Nf3 d5
2.g3 and for 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4, so most of the games belong to the ECO
codes A06-A14. Because as mentioned above, the move d2-d4 involves
transpositions to other openings, also these systems are covered on
the CD with some important variations. Reti opening it is of great
importance to understand the plans for play - merely learning variations
will not take you very far here.
Furthermore, the CD includes a tree of all games and a training database
with 79 examples.
CHESSBASEMAGAZINE
81
this time with two CDs! RRP: £17.95 / $27
The current issue of ChessBase Magazine consists of two CDs. One is
the regular magazine CD, with games, reports, training, and a beautiful
multimedia report on the FIDE world championship in Delhi. The second
contains a new players encyclopedia which replaces the one you received
with your ChessBase 8.0 program. There are around 20,000 new player
entries and more than 1,100 new pictures. And there is some other
good news: the photos are now in "JPG" format, which reduces
the file size dramatically, without losing any of the picture quality.
So replacing the older encyclopedia with the new larger one will actually
save you 400 MB of hard disk space.
Chess
Tiger 14.0 RRP:
£39.95 / $49.50
Christoph Théron‘s ChessTiger is the shooting
star among chess engines. It has gained enormously in strength over
the past few years as its impressive victories in several international
tournaments have demonstrated: the Open
Championship of Spain 1998 as well as the French Open Championships
1999 and 2000 . In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking
list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart
from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger
is a particularly aggressive special version of ChessTiger which mercilessly
applies its additional knowledge to attack the king. That‘s why GambitTiger
often chooses moves which other programs would never play. Yet the
success of this unconventional way of playing speaks for itself. In
autumn of 2000, GambitTiger won the Dutch Open Championship by a long
shot. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the „Linares of chess
programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their
direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage
of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation
mode.

The
Chigorin Defence
Martin Breutigam RRP: £17.95 / $27
"On master level, the Chigorin Defence has been played relatively
seldom, and probably that’s one of the reasons why it has been analysed
less intensively than other openings - good prerequisites for freethinkers
and adventurers on the chess board!" (Breutigam)
The Chigorin Defence resulting after the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 has
become popular again thanks to the young Russian Alexander Morozevich,
who with this choice has been holding his own even against the players
of the absolute world top. It was high time for a publication to make
the subtleties of this opening understandable also to the non-grandmaster,
and this gap in chess literature now has been filled by FIDE master
Martin Breutigam. In a small but swell database with 100 entries -
7 texts and 93 sample
games - the long time player in the German Bundesliga has compiled
all his knowledge on the Chigorin Defence. Another database includes
54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired
knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than
4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games.

CHESSBASE
MAGAZINE 80 February 2001 RRP: £17.95 / $27
The ChessBase Magazine 80 contains the main body of 1262 games and
five database reports. There are many strong tournaments, the men´s
Olympiad in Istanbul and the Braingame and FIDE World Championships
in London and Delhi/Teheran. The two world championships were held
in competition with each other. In the Braingames world championship
there were only two decisive games, both won by Kramnik, who also
managed to find an impregnable defence against Kasparov's white onslaught.
The FIDE world championship in Delhi and Teheran ended in victory
for the favourite Vishy Anand, who thus becomes Asia's first chess
world champion.
School
of Elementary Tactics
Martin Weteschnik RRP: £17.95 / $27
Martin Weteschnik has made a name for himself as an author of several
books on chess tactics. His first CD consists of two parts. In the
first database he dwells on his theories on tactics, while the second
database he makes use of the advantages of a modern database program,
above all the function training question - a test makes the theoretically
schooled user ready for practice. In both databases, the author has
used the modern techniques of audio and videoclips. Here is an extract
from the introduction to "The School of Elementary Tactics":
"What constitutes a combination? Which parts are actually 'combined'?
These are the elements - the tactical elements and motifs - that are
combined. To show and explain them is subject of this CD. For the
first time you will find the tactical motifs explained down to their
primary parts. This will give you a real profound comprehension to
utilise and work with
these elements! Naturally you will be able to use the motifs thereafter
much more effectively, as if you would exercise to solve combinations
solely. Or do you think one should try to write a novel before learning
the letters, the words and the grammar?!"

Killer
Moves
George Renko RRP: £17.95/$27
If you occupy yourself with chess - i.e. study games, variations,
endgames etc. - you store a lot of pictures in your memory, consciously
or subconsciously. The more of these you can retrieve during a game,
the better you play. Of course, there are also a number of additional
factors determining the successful realization of this theory in practice.
Still, the learning of pictures and motifs is the essential thing
for having success in chess. And the most effective method of doing
this is to study tactical positions and combinatory motifs. George
Renko, mathematician and chess trainer, has compiled a huge number
of tactical sample positions. After the main course - his CD "Intensive
Course Tactics" - the author now serves the desert "Killer
Moves" - multipurpose moves usually forcing an immediate decision.
The nine databases are split up according to difficulty and contain
about 1.600 tasks, partially composed, partially taken from practical
games. During this training course the author doesn't dwell on lengthy
explanations - according to the motto "one picture says more
than a thousand words".

FRITZ RRP: £69.95/$99
Deep
Fritz is the multiprocessor version of Fritz and supports one to eight
processors. On a dual processor machine, it will run about 80% faster
than on a single. Deep Fritz is based on an improved Fritz6 engine.
It has better positional understanding than Fritz6 and more endgame
knowledge. Furthermore the program defends better against human anticomputer-strategies,
i.e. kings attacks in closed positions. The opening book has been
extended and revised.

DEEP
JUNIOR 7.0
for two or more processors £69.95/$99
Upgrade from Deep Junior 6 £49.95/$69.95
Deep Junior is a multi-processor capable chess program that will
run on computers with one, two or more processors. The program divides
the task efficiently and its speed increases with the number of
processors. Junior profits from the experience and knowledge of
leading grandmasters, like Boris Alterman, who was Garry Kasparov´s
second in the famed Internet game against the rest of the world.
During this game he was assisted by Deep Junior running on a four-processor
system. GM Alterman has also contributed a giant openings book,
optimised for Junior's playing style. This is included on the CD.
At the Brain Games qualifier (April 2001) Deep Junior had the popular
chess program Fritz on the ropes by going into a 5:0 lead in the
24-game match. Fritz had to work very hard to equalize in the very
last game, and then win the playoff. Experts all over the world
were deeply impressed by the ruthless attacking style that the Junior
displayed in this match. IM Hannu Wegner wrote: "The latest
version of Junior has clearly made tremendous progress in tactics
and especially in the execution of brilliant kingside attacks."
Junior is the work of two Israeli programmers, Amir Ban and Shay
Bushinsky. The program won the Microcomputer World Championship
in 1997 as well as the mammoth Cadaqués 2000 tournament of
the world's leading programs.

Classical
Sicilian B56-B59
Anthony Kosten RRP: £17.95/$27
After the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6, the
basic position of the Classical Sicilian arises on the board. This
is the position which has been examined by our English author. GM
Kosten's very committed work is an exclusive database with "only"
942 entries. His expert preselection of relevant material considerably
facilitates the study of this quite extensive opening sector for the
learning player. The individual variations are presented in 27 detailed
texts with links to 915 sample games (22 games from Kramnik) of which
200 are annotated (40 games analysed by Kosten exclusively for this
CD). The training database features 25 test games with 55 training
questions where you can gain points sweating against the clock. Moreover,
the CD contains a reference database with more than
8.000 games (i.e. all games available in ChessBase format) and a tree
of all games.
The
Sicilian Accelerated Dragon after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4
g6 is a solid defense, enabling Black to go for a long term struggle
for the full point. Due to its clear strategic conception, the learning
player is able familiarize himself with its objectives in a logical
way which is something of a rare exception in the Sicilian Defense
with its excessively analysed tactical sequences. That´s why
this opening is very popular above all with positional players.
The extensive treatment is divided into three parts. First the different
opening variations are presented in 15 chapters, each of which containing
the relevant sample games. The complete database includes more than
8.000 games from which no less than 150 have been annotated by the
authors themselves. After this introduction to theory, the middlegame
part dwells on the strategic facets of the opening. In the concluding
test part, you can finally check the freshly acquired knowledge
in 20 games with 57 training questions sweating against the clock.
