Nimzo Indian 4.f3 and Sämisch variation
Vadim Milov

£17.95 / $27

The Nimzo-Indian is one of Black's most popular and reliable openings. If White strives for an opening advantage and interesting, rich positions with ample room for creativity it is often a good idea to avoid the well trodden paths. Thus, the variations 4.f3 and the Sämisch, which are presented on this CD, are ideally suited to fight the Nimzo-Indian. They usually give rise to sharp, unbalanced positions with chances for both sides. In the past, players such as Botvinnik, Bronstein, Geller, Spassky have used these systems successfully, while today e.g. Shirov and Jussupow play these lines with success. On this CD grandmaster Vadim Milov presents the most important ideas and lines of this opening. Ten introductory texts with links to the most important games explain the basic ideas and variations. Numerous proposals improve today's theory while 68 games annotated by Milov offer
additional information and advice. A training database invites you to test your acquired knowledge.

Scandinavian
Curt Hansen
£19.95/$29.95
The Scandinavian has long lost its former exotic status. Thanks to the practical success and a number of publications by some players from Hamburg gathered around the several times German champion Matthias Wahls in Germany this opening even managed to gain the reputation of being a rather solid weapon against 1.e4.
The Scandinavian - basically these are two different openings: after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Black can play 2...Qxd5 or 2...Nf6, and accordingly two different systems arise, and there is hardly any practitioner, who has both moves in
his repertoire. Thanks to Curt Hansen, who scrutinized both systems extensively. His study of the current theoretical works is well reflected in his 62 database texts. But he also goes beyond the current state of theory and presents his own research. More than 30 games are extensively annotated by the author (there are all in all about 500 annotated games); a real gem
are his 12 games in the training mode; 316 questions are posed, and answering them you can reach a maximum number of 924 points.

How chess training is fun:
- suitable for advanced players
- extensive opening course in 62 chapters
- database with roughly 29.000 games
- ChessBase-Reader included
- complete English version

The Author:
Grandmaster Curt Hansen became first known to the chess public at large when he became World Junior Champion in 1984. For many years he has been Denmark's No. 1. With the "Scandinavian" Hansen presents his first work at ChessBase.

ChessBase Magazine 87

There are six tournament reports, 70 endgame analyses, 17 games in the strategy section and 25 in the tactics database. In addition: 6500 high-quality correspondence chess games and a whopping 1 hour and 22 minutes of video material – interviews with John Nunn and Peter Svidler.

How to Play the Nimzo Indian (CD ROM)
Reinhold Ripperger
£14.99/$19.99

The opening arising after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4 carries the name of Aaron Nimzowitsch (1886-1935), who played some wonderful games with it and
contributed many important ideas. However, the Nimzo-Indian can well be called the opening of the world champions. Capablanca employed it and lost one of the most legendary games in chess history - against Botwinnik, another world champion. Fischer scored his greatest achievements with this opening in 1972 when he became world champion. Karpov and Kasparov after him also employed the opening to good effect.
Reinhold Rippberger's CD follows an approach similar to "King's Indian with f4" - not concentrating on concrete variations, but rather showing how to play certain types of positions. Apart from the 21 introductory texts, there are 300 games many with annotations. The author presents a database with 35 games featuring training questions. as well as two additional databases with more than 47,000 games.

The Slav Defence (CD ROM)
Dorian Rogozenko
£17.95/ $27

The Slav has had a reputation as being one of the most solid replies to 1 d4. Supporting the centre with 2...c6 allows Black's c8 bishop to enter the fold, and in some lines it is difficult for White to find an opening advantage.
Containing 32,000 games and 86 database texts, Rogozenko introduces all of the main variations, explaining and identifying recurring strategy and tactical motifs. A huge database makes this an essential tool for Slav players everywhere.

HIARCS 8
£39.95/$49.50
The program HIARCS, written by Mark Uniacke of England, has been one of the world’s top programs ever since it won the microcomputer world chess championship in 1993. HIARCS stands for "Higher Intelligence Auto Response Chess System". And indeed the distinguishing feature is that the author, like no other, uses a maximum of chess knowledge to increase the playing strength of his program. The new version of HIARCS has been improved and enhanced in a number of areas, especially in its search algorithms and the implementation of concrete chess knowledge. The search tree has been further optimised and results in an increase in search depth of up to three ply in the middle game. The maximum search depth is now 62 ply! This leads to substantially increased tactical power while at the same time the program maintains its active positional playing style. Chess knowledge has always been the program’s main strength. The improved search algorithms made it possible to implement even more advanced positional functions, especially in the areas of "typical pawn structures" and "dynamic evaluation of the centre". HIARCS 8 evaluates important factors like weak squares, king’s safety, piece exchanges, initiative and king attack much more reliably than the predecessor versions.

System requirements: Windows 95/NT4.0 or higher/98/ME/2000/XP, Pentium 200 MHz or compatible,32 MB RAM,1 MB graphics card, sound card,CD ROM drive, mouse keyboard

The Bird Opening
Dmitrij Oleinikov
£17.95/ $27
This CD presents a complete opening system as White, based on the Bird Opening (1 f4), a system many Black players will know about, but be unequipped to handle. The Bird Opening is a good choice for both enjoyable over the board games as well as for opening studies at home. The opening itself has many sides to it - there are sharp forcing lines, typical pawn structures, and even endgames which give White tangible winning chances.
* suitable for club players
* extensive opening course in 14 chapters
* database containing more than 15,000 games
* two training databases

ChessBase Monograph: World Champion Emanuel Lasker
£17.95 / $27

Emanuel Lasker became world champion in 1894 and kept the title until 1921. An incredible 27 years on the throne are more than enough to yield Lasker a very special place in the history of chess. Like Kasparov today, Lasker's fantastic series of tournament successes didn't come to an end when he lost the title of the world champion and this emphasises his extraordinary position in the chess world. Lasker’s style wasn’t understood by his contemporaries. Prejudice and misjudgement of his play still persist. That is why the ChessBase biography above all takes a very close look at Lasker’s chess.

All the features at a glance:
- extensive curriculum vitae
- complete collection of all 1182 Lasker games or game fragments available
- informative reports of all significant tournaments
- special reports on Lasker’s world championship matches
- special analyses trying to explain Lasker’s superiority
- many annotated games
- multimedia database containing interviews (with Averbakh, Baumbach among
others) and video clips from lectures held at the Lasker conference in
Potsdam (by Hübner, Unzicker, Lilienthal and others).

Yuri Averbakh: Lasker [who for some years lived in Moscow] helped the Soviet chess school; particularly his art of defense and his understanding of endgames had an enormous influence on the Soviet masters.

The material is exhaustive and may be viewed using a database program (ChessBase, Chess Assistant or a PGN reader), Adobe Acrobat and a web browser. Great value for money , with a 7,500 game collection with theoretical analysis, plus a 58-page Adobe Acrobat (PDF) book, plus a Palview 3 reader which allows you to play through the games analysis using a web browser.

Pirc Defence
ChessBase CD ROM
Grandmaster School St Petersburg
£17.95 $27
There is a huge quantity of games played with the Pirc Defence. However, the number of really important ideas is comparatively small, and the central variations which are called theory are still easily comprehensible.

The centre piece of this CD ROM is a specialised database with 8 database texts and 116 sample games where the author GM Lugovoi has compiled all his knowledge about this opening. The whole material was checked and revised by Alexander Khalifman, FIDE World Champion 1999, so the quality level of the database is very high. There is a total of 80,000 games in total, making this a top product from a quantative point of view as well.

Queens Gambit Accepted
Boris Schipkov
£17.95 $27
The Queens Gambit Accepted is one of the classical openings against 1 d4 and has been, or is still, part of the repertoire of all World Champions. Nowadays it is Anand who leads the exponents of the QGA, but Kasparov, Shirov and Ivanchuk occasionally resort to 1 d4 d5 2 c4 dxc4.

The large database includes 19 texts explaining the different variations, as well as including 20,779 games, of which 1200 are annotated. There is also a comprehensive training database, containing 30 games and 86 training questions.

Philidor Defence
Alexander Bangiev
£17.95 $27
The Philidor Defence (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d6) combines a number of advantages. The black player can specify whether to play set-ups with or without the exchange on d4. Typical positions, and the plans coming from these are easy to learn, whilst the opening remains quiet in terms of new theory. Black does however have to be comfortable playing from passive positions while waiting for their chance.

The CD contains 13,400 games, 300 of which are annotated. It also includes a training database and a tree of all the games.

Queen ’s Gambit with 5.Bf4
GM Rustem Dautov
RRP: £17.95 / $27

The Queens Gambit Orthodox is one of the most solid defences for Black against 1.d4. From White's point of view, the system after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 Be7 5.Bf4 has raised enormously in adherents, and has nearly superseded 5.Bg5 in popularity. In view of the fantastic 63% score for the first player, this can hardly be surprising.

Dautov has included in his database 13 texts and 3657 games, 255 games have been annotated, 81 of which by the author himself - most of them exclusively for this CD. A second database contains 20 games with 46 training questions.
