The 35th Chess Olympiad Bled took place 25th October - 11th
November 2002.
As expected the men's team title in the 35th Chess Olympiad
in Bled was taken by the favourites Russia. The team of Garry Kasparov,
Alexander Khalifman, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Alexander Morozevich
and Sergei Rublevsky always looked like having the power to overwhelm opponents
if heavy scoring was needed. The powerhouse team was the same team that won the
title two years ago with one change, World Number 1 Garry Kasparov in the team
instead of Konstantin Sakaev. Kasparov had an excellent event scoring 7.5/9 and
the highest ELO performance of the event at 2933 extending his lead at the top
of the FIDE rating list. After Kasparov's poor performance for Russia in the
Russia vs. The Rest of the World rapid match he underlined his dominance again.
Russia cruised to the title with 2-2 draws in the final two
rounds which looked clearly pre-agreed. I don't like the practice of agreeing
draws before matches (or during the early stages of matches) as it is in my
view against the values of sport. Such things have occurred in football matches
(Germany - Austria in the Soccer World Cup a few years back for instance) and
have been roundly condemned. This practice has always been part of the FIDE
Olympiad but it shouldn't be allowed.
Russia did lose one match, to second placed Hungary. There
players also lost four games during the Olympiad including Robert Ruck's
victory against Peter Svidler in the above mentioned loss.
A point behind them was Hungary whose squad looks set to be
challengers for the next few Olympiads. The core of their squad with Peter
Leko, Judit Polgar and Zoltan Almasi is as good as any. They lost just one game
in the whole Olympiad but unlike the Russians they didn't manage to get the
crushing victories to keep pace.
The battle for the Bronze medal was far more open. Armenia's
3-1 victory against Georgia eventually settled it for them. Armenia have an
unglamorous but strong team and they have been consistent high finishers in
team events in recent years.

The women's event was far more interesting with a battle
amongst three teams for Gold going to the final round. Top seeds China emerged
as winners of the event. Number three seeds Russia finished second and number 9
seeds Poland were shock bronze medalists. Poland earned their medal as they
started a meltdown that must be practically unprecidented in Olympiad history.
Number 2 seeds Georgia after 10 rounds led with 24 points, China were 3.5
points behind them on 21.5 and Poland at this stage were in 6th place 5 points
behind the leaders on 19. Poland then beat Georgia in round 11 2.5-0.5 and the
Georgian team seemed to lose all composure losing all their remaining matches
and at the last even managed to finished outside the medals completely.

There are prizes in the Olympiad for the best percentage
performers on each board. I'm not sure of the precise regulations but it looks
like a minimum of 9 games were required to win a board prize except for the
reserve boards where 7 were needed.

Winning board prizes when playing for the leading teams is
very hard although not impossible. Garry Kasparov narrowly missed out on a
bronze board prize on top board on the number of games played (Al-Modiahki had
the same percentage but played 3 more games) this included a draw against
Gelfand in a non-match against Israel. Kasparov did however top the ELO
performance list with a 2933 performance 100 points better than Vladimir
Akopian in second place. This in contrast to his prospective match opponent in
the reunification next year ,Ruslan Ponomariov. Ponomariov only scored 6/11 for
a performance of 2684. This seems to confirm the impression that he has slipped
back since his win in the FIDE World Championships and Linares performances at
the start of the year. This is not necessarily a big surprise but does mark the
end of continuous improvement over the last few years. I still expect him to be
world number one at some point in the future but maybe not as fast as might
have been thought possible after Linares.

News of the politics from the Olympiad has been
disappointingly light. Of course FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was
re-elected along with his team. The one piece of news I do have is that
Kasparov's company Worldchessratings.com will shortly take over the production
of the FIDE rating list. They will have a couple of years to prove they can do
it. One of FIDE's ideas for some time has been to extend the rating list to
lower and lower rated players to increase their player base and use that to
generate income. I have been against that, the international rating list is
just that, a list of international players not of local players and I don't
want FIDE anywhere near the chess I play. I understand the idea is to offer
rating services to all the Federations for their local rating lists and
eventually to extend it to other organisations including those that run online
playing sites. Kasparov's company has surely only earned this opportunity as a
quid pro quo for him returning to FIDE as a player. I believe this is a pretty
scandalous state of affairs. For one thing Kasparov has only one proven
ability, as a chess player, his record with pet projects and organisations such
as this is very poor. They generally last as long as his enthusiasm for
them.
