Kramnik vs Deep Fritz. A Brain Games Event

Kramnik vs Deep Fritz. A Brain Games Event

The Royal Meridiene

July 31st saw the announcement by Brain Games Network of a Man vs Machine match which they claim to be the sequel to the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue match in 1997 (see James Coleman's report).

The Braingames Man Machine Match between Vladimir Kramnik and Deep Fritz in Bahrain has been delayed until early 2002 has been postponed in response to last week's terrorist attack on the United States. Sir Jeremy Hanley, Chairman, Brain Games Network explained that "Just as similar international events throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world are being postponed, we too felt that it would be inappropriate to proceed with the match during a period of such concern and tragedy."

The event will be an eight game match held in the Royal Meridiene, Manama, Bahrain hosted by the Emir of Bahrain. It was to have place October 12th - November 1st 2001.

How Kramnik and Fritz qualified

The Brain Games Computer match was planned prior to the Vladimir Kramnik vs. Garry Kasparov BGN match. Kramnik won that match 8.5-6.5 in London 8th October to 2nd November 2001. A qualifing match between Deep Fritz and Deep Junior was held in Cadaques to decide which program would play Kramnik. Deep Fritz won 14-12 after a playoff. Deep Blue was dismantled after beating Garry Kasparov in 1997 and hasn't played since. A baby version makes occasional appearances at IBM events.
