Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won a strange game against Loek van Wely. He certainly had the initiative but it wasn't clear it should have been that good. But Van Wely's position disintigrated on the run up to first time control.

Playing white against Vladimir Kramnik's Petroff Defence is a tough proposition, at least if you want an advantage. Michael Adams had an aggressive chance on move 17, seemingly already analysed in depth by Kramnik if you believe his after game comments, he chose a simpler and quickly drawing continuation.
